The purpose of this site is to conduct research into clinical depression. Much of the research involves investigating the public's attitudes towards depression and its treatment. The site is operated by researchers from the School of Psychology at the University of Western Australia. You can find more information about the researchers below.
Researcher Profiles
David Erceg-Hurn (PhD Candidate)
David completed his undergraduate Psychology training at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia, between 2003 and 2006. He graduated with First-Class Honours.
David commenced his postgraduate studies at the University of Western Australia in 2007. He is undertaking a combined Masters of Clinical Psychology and PhD degree. His research involves investigating public perceptions of depression and its treatment.
David's work has appeared in several peer-reviewed journals, including the American Psychological Association's flagship journal American Psychologist. He was recently awarded the UWA Prize for Higher Degree by Research for the most outstanding peer-reviewed publication by a Humanities and Social Sciences Graduate student in 2008. David was also recently invited by Oxford University Press to write his first book chapter.
In 2009 David was awarded a Mental Health Postgraduate Scholarship by the Australian Psychological Society and Department of Health and Ageing. He also holds an Australian Postgraduate Award.
Neil McLean (Chief Investigator)
Neil undertook his training in Psychology at the University of Melbourne during the 1970s. He has been the Director of the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Western Australia for many years. In addition to his teaching, research and supervision duties, Neil also maintains a private practice delivering psychological services to the public.
Neil has broad research interests. He has conducted research on many topics, ranging from public perceptions of depression through to eating disorders and fear of flying.
In addition to his extensive experience as a Clinical and Academic Psychologist, Neil also has vast experience as a Sports Psychologist. He has worked with numerous elite sporting teams such as the West Coast Eagles, Fremantle Dockers (AFL Football) and Perth Wildcats (Basketball). Neil has also worked as a Sports Psychologist with Australian Hockey teams at several Olympic Games.
